  • [31 Jan 1998] Three short suttas from the Samyutta Nikaya:
    • Ogha-tarana Sutta (SN 1.1) — Crossing Over the Flood. The Buddha explains how he "crossed over the flood" of craving.
    • Arañña Sutta (SN 1.10) — The Wilderness. Why do the monks living in the forest look so happy?
    • Uttara Sutta (SN 2.19) — Uttara the Deva's son. Doing good and making merit: are these the best one can aim for in this short life?
    • P.S.: Lots more suttas to come in February/March...
  • [11 Jan 98] Befriending the Suttas: Some Suggestions for Reading the Pali Discourses With so many suttas now available in English at Access to Insight (over 400, and growing) many of you have been asking for suggestions as to where to start. This article addresses the questions:
    • Why should I read the suttas?
    • Which ones should I read?
    • How should I read them?
